Challenges - Tumblr Posts

It’s finally time for my favourite art challenge of the year! I did a little cover page yesterday to celebrate. I have a full-time job for the first time, so I’m going to have to do all my pieces in 90 minutes or less, because that’s all the time I can squeeze in before work. How is this going to turn out?
Day 1 - ink and water
Spider often ‘falls asleep’ in lessons, but he isn’t always sleeping.
This is water-soluble ink spread around with a waterbrush. I’ve never tried using it on only some parts of the picture before.

Day 2 - gel pens (and a brush pen)
More creatures than Louise and her foster parents call her house their home.
Remember when I said I only had 90 minutes a day to do these? I don’t know what made me think I could do this in an hour and half. It took that long to do just the lineart and the spot blacks, I’ve been crosshatching for hours! I’m really pleased with this though, so it was worth it.

Inktober 2019 : day 3 - fountain Pentel
Divination can be done with almost anything if you know how. Aichmomancy would normally be done with a knife or pins, but a sharpened pencil will do.
The first outing this year for the splatter pen! I tried not to clean the splatters off the scan so you can see them. I did manage to do this piece in one hour, I stuck to my time limit this time!

Inktober 2019 : day 4 - pentel pocket brush and ink wash
Lottie wears her hair over that eye for a reason.
This one also snuck past my 90-minute time limit, I think it took just under 2 hours. I’m not as quick with the brush pen as I thought!

Inktober 2019: day 5 - dip pen and liquid ink
Isaac doesn’t always know how to pass the time at night. I had the idea for this one a few days ago but I had to save it for the weekend so I’d have enough time. I probably could have pushed the lighting a bit further, but I ran out of Saturday.

Inktober 2019: day 7 - ink and water
Nettle is not renowned for her masterful control of her temper.
I wanted to have another go at blending only part of the picture like on day 1, but it didn’t work quite as well this time, it came out too dark and flat. In hindsight maybe spot colour would have been better, but hey ho this is how we learn.

Inktober 2019: day 8 - fineliners
If you tell her to wait, she’ll wait.
I was going to shade this with grey pens, but I decided on a whim to try doing just clean line art instead. I’m quite pleased with it?

Inktober 2019: day 10 - G-pen
Sweetpea is trying on a new hat, but I don’t think it’s going to stay on over his hair. Maybe he’ll have better luck once the other ear frill drops.
I promise I drew this on the day, I just ran out of time/energy to scan it! I keep coming up with ideas that I know will take too long, but then I can’t bring myself to go with a weaker idea so I end up having to finish it at night. Sweetpea turned out looking so cute though, so it’s worth it, right?
(If you know your nuts and seeds you can work out how big he is by that hat.)

Inktober 2019: day 12 - brush inking and coloured ink
The way Nettle’s hair waves around when she uses her powers is a sign of poor control.
I wanted to practice using those rigger brushes a bit more, so I drew something pretty simple. They’re so hard to control! You can get more ink in them at once without losing the fine tip though.

Inktober 2019: day 13 - brush inking and ink wash
A character we haven’t really met before! This is ‘Sapling’, the Dai Empress, in extremely casual clothes. This might even be something like pyjamas. She rules a vast empire that spans more than half a galaxy. I normally try not to use the same inking method two days in a row, but carrying bottles of ink to and from work was making me nervous so I thought I’d better do all the brush inking at the weekend. I did use different brushes though!

Inktober 2019: day 16 - gel pens
Spider starts to feel a bit sick if Nettle spins him around too much.
I don’t think I’ve done this picture in gel pens before? I’ve drawn it every Inktober so far, but I was at work and couldn’t check which inks I had and hadn’t used.

Inktober 2019: day 18 - fineliners and ink wash
Jessie can summon lightning even on a clear day.
I spent a good 20 minutes just staring at my sketchbook drawing a total blank on ideas, so in the end I decided to extend the ‘girls looking straight forward’ set from last year. Maybe I’ll do a few more?

Inktober 2019: day 19 - brush inking and coloured ink
If they fall down without time to prepare, they don’t come out right.

Inktober 2019: day 20 - mapping pen
It’s not clear to anyone why Coda attracts so many butterflies.
I went for something simple again because I’m tabling at London MCM this weekend and I’m starting to panic a little bit!

Inktober 2019: day 21 - ink and water
She knows she’s supposed to use matches to light the fires.
This is another character who hasn’t really appeared before. You might see her again before the month is over.

Inktober 2019: day 22 - gel pen
Sweetpea and some of his friends are comparing the Autumn fruits of their trees.
It’s not Inktober anymore, so I’m going to post these all in one go. I promise I did do them on the day!

Draw a character/object/scene, and shade them using ONLY solid blacks and whites. Bonus points for good use of lights/shadows
Draw a different object/scene/character. Shade using hatching, crosshatcing, and/or pointillism. Bonus points for lights/shadows and textures.
Colors! Pick a color palette, and paint a scene/character/object using only those colors (some blending allowed). Bonus points for good use of lights/shadows.
Draw and color a scene/object/character - no lines allowed! (aka - lineless art). Don’t forget light and shadows!
Draw a scene/character in a style you’ve never drawn before. If emulating an artist, credit+link. Bonus for color style.
Draw a character. Draw 10 emotions/expressions. Bonus points for 'uncommon’ emotions. (i.e. anxiety, guilt, despair, loneliness etc.)
Draw three random shapes using your opposite hand (or your foot). Now design characters from those shapes.
Turn on the tv (or load your illegally downloaded movies). Pick an actor and draw them.
Almost done! Let’s have some fun. Draw some fanart. Bonus points if it’s super obscure and unknown. Make people guess what it’s from.
Last day! Find a drawing you did within the last year. Now draw it again using what you’ve learned! Link it for comparison!
Look at all that amazing improvement! Congrats!
[Update] There is now a sequel challenge, Draw All The Things!
30 Day Art Challenge: Draw all the things
My first challenge, Improvement Hell, was a way to inspire people to draw different things different ways, drawing outside their comfort zone, and most of all to draw every day. I had a few people ask for a follow up. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the sequel: Draw All The Things
Each day has three prompts. Some are specifics, others are vague, but all are geared to spark your imagination and inspiration. Take from them whatever you want. Design a character, an illustration, a collage. Singular or plural. Literal or symbolic.
Casual Mode: Pick and draw one prompt each day
Normal Mode: Combine and draw two prompts each day
Hard Mode: Combine and draw all three prompts each day

my wish was granted.
Last night before i went to sleep, i remember i wished i will get sick and eventually die. I dont remember why i had that kind of thought… but i know i was thinking of it. Imagining how things would be like if i get a serious illness and maybe die because of it. I was curious of my family and friends’ reactions about my condition. Will they treat me differently? Will they shower me with love and care? Will i even get their attention? Those are just some of the questions i had in mind. Somehow it is not just one of my daily dramas but from my own curiousity and prolly active imagination. However, i didn’t expect that that night my wish will be granted… Yeah, i was diagnosed with a serious illness… It has something to do with my respiratory system… my breathing… how my lungs works. I remember visiting a hospital and a woman approached me to inform me that i need to be hospitalized that instant because my case is already in the serious stage. But i didn’t get scared. I dont know if i just didnt understand what she was talking about or maybe i was too schocked and in denial that time. I walked around the hospital. I saw several patients walking in front of me. I saw some dying… while their families are crying. I saw some patients laughing… they are the little kids playing, running around but they were wearing hospital gowns. Im not sure but i think i’ve been walking the whole time. I’ve visited some rooms too. I think i even got scared when a soul of a dying patient (a kid) tried communicating with me. I was scared. Really scared. I am not sure if i died… But i saw some familiar faces with me… And then… I woke up. Frightened as if everything that happened was real. I pulled my blanket to cover my face. I was scared that i might see the little kid. Then i offered a little prayer… I asked God to forgive me, to let all the souls of the people who died find their way to the Heaven, to thank Him that it was just a dream & to tell Him i dont want it to happen again. Then i went back to sleep. That morning i was glad it was all just a dream. ~~~~~ Moral Lesson of this story: Think before you ask a wish. Don’t blurt out random stuff especially when you are being emotional. Also, love life. Be thankful that we are healthy and blessed instead of asking something like dying when there are many people out there suffering from an illness, problem, hindrances in life without having their chance to prove themselves and their worth. Dont act stupid. Always be thankful to God for giving you another chance to live everyday with your loved ones. It doesn’t matter if you got a lot of problems; those are just his challenges for you to grow up, to learn, & to be stronger. God will not put us in danger; He’s always there to remind us to not let these hardships stop us from living. There is always a solution to a problem. There is hope. Don’t give up on living. Life is important. We should live our lives to the fullest!
